William Cash Harper
December 01, 1922 - March 28, 2010
Savannah-William Bill Cash Harper, 87, passed away on March 28, 2010 at Riverview Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born in Vernon, Alabama, son of Lona and Emmitt Harper. He graduated from Jonesboro Arkansas High School and went into the US Navy, serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. After four years of service to his country, he continued his education first at Mississippi State University and then at the University of Georgia, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry. While working for the Georgia Forestry Commission in Screven County, he was called back into active duty service in the US Army, fighting in the Korean War. Upon his return, he continued employment with the Georgia Forestry Commission in Baldwin and Bulloch Counties. He retired from the National Guard as a Major in 1970 and from the Georgia Forestry Commission in Macon, GA as Deputy Director in 1985.
He was a member of the Society of American Foresters, GA Forestry Alumni Association, GA Forestry Retirees Association as well as other civic and professional organizations. He was an avid outdoorsman and a pilot, flying in the Korean War and for the GA Forestry Commission. He was a member of Wesley Monumental UMC and the Fellowship Sunday School Class in Savannah, GA. He was also a loyal supporter of the GA Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Loudelle Harper Laws John, Columbus, MS and Emmitt Dee Harper Essex Bob, Columbus, IN; brother and sister-in-law, Reuben Harper Julia, Newport, AR, and a brother-in-law, Bob Ryon, Hinesville. GA.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Dot Porter Harper, Savannah, GA; daughter, Penny Harper, Savannah, GA, and sister-in-law, Carolyn Porter Ryon, Hinesville, GA, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church.
Pallbearers will be his nephews. Honorary Pallbearers are members of the Fellowship Class, Wesley Monumental UMC.
Burial: 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at Hinesville Cemetery, Hinesville, GA.
The family would like to thank the staff at Riverview Health and Rehabilitation Center for their wonderful care and support during his time there.
